What to Expect
The facility can seat more than 10,000 people for large events and provides an intimate atmosphere for a few thousand for arena events that don’t need the full capacity.
Sports Atmosphere
When attending a UTC Mocs basketball game, most fans sit in the court-level seating. In fact, the upper bowl seating was not available for a stretch of time during the renovation and addition of the Wolford Family Athletic Center.
When the lower court seating area is full, the arena has a strong reputation as being helpful for the home team. The upper bowl fills for big events or when the Mocs play host to a major college school like Tennessee. Most home men’s baseball games draw a few thousand, though.
UTC has a 465-138 record in men’s basketball home games at McKenzie Arena, showing the significant home-court advantage the Mocs enjoy. UTC women’s basketball has an impressive record of 269-75 at McKenzie Arena, where it started playing games full-time in the 1999-2000 season.
UTC men’s basketball has played in the arena since its opening. One of the first events in McKenzie Arena was a sold-out UTC Mocs basketball game against Tennessee on Dec. 1, 1982.
Concert Atmosphere
Because of the steepness of the seats throughout the lower and upper bowls, concertgoers feel much closer to the stage than they would if attending events at other arenas, which is a big plus for those who like to feel like they’re a part of the action.
Reviews of music performances at McKenzie Arena say the sound travels well inside the arena, delivering an enjoyable experience for fans no matter where they choose to sit.
Arena Facilities
Fans have a seating area with padded seats in the upper part of the court-level seating. These seats cost more and usually require you to belong to a booster club to purchase them for basketball games. The padded seats also carry a higher price for concerts.
The center of the arena has a large four-sided scoreboard with video capabilities. Smaller scoreboards are near the edges of the arena’s floor, so you’re always up to date on the flow of a game.
As is common with older indoor arenas, the concourse areas feel a little tight, and the permanent concession stands are on the smaller side. McKenzie Arena doesn’t have many food options outside the typical arena fare, such as hot dogs and nachos. The prices are more reasonable than at other arenas, though.
Although McKenzie Arena doesn’t have many amenities, it provides a good experience for a city the size of Chattanooga. Reviewers consistently tout its cleanliness, friendly staff, and nearby parking options.
